A tranquil, calming, room with soothing sounds, floating clouds and comfortable seating. These are the scenes from the new sensory room in The Nursery at Valley House.

Originally a side office; Nursery staff have transformed this once neglected space into a brilliant new sensory room! The new room is for all the children who attend the Nursery, and staff are confident everyone will benefit from spending time in there. As ever, activities will be adapted according to the individual needs of each learner, and will be particularly invaluable in supporting children with additional needs.

The room consists of tall standing bubble tubes, mirrors, serene projected images, bean bags, various touchy feely toys, lamps ,LED magnetic lighting and much more said Nursery Manager Humaira Rai. There really is something for everyone! Staff feel it’s the perfect environment to practise turn taking and sharing with children.

Every item in the room has been specially selected by our skilled staff. Children will be able to explore texture, shape and colour in a safe, comfortable space. They will be able to practice turn-taking in small groups or work one-to-one with a member of staff.

What are the benefits of a sensory room for children?

Time in a sensory room helps children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills.

By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviours, which ultimately improves focus.

Ear defenders are available for children who are sensitive to noise or certain sounds, but they can also be used to reduce sensory input and help the children to focus their learning.

Each item in the room has been specially selected for a purpose; soothing lights put the mind at ease, bubbles introduce a calming effect, beanbag chairs provide soft, comfortable places to sit, or lay down to watch light projections on the ceiling. Staff have hand-picked resources that aid with motor skills, dexterity and problem solving.

The range of resources available and multitude of ways in which they can be used with children means that the possibilities for learning are endless! Although the room won’t just be used for learning, it’s  also a safe space to take children who may need some quiet time.

“We are very proud of the new ‘Sensory Room’ that we have been busy creating within a separate space in our Nursery. Sensory play supports cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, language development, problem solving skills, and social interaction. This project has been a team effort and we had a purpose in mind that helped us to create the perfect sensory room. We put a tremendous amount of thought into the equipment and resources that we have provided to support our children with additional needs, sensory needs, or development delays. Our sensory room will support children to calm and focus themselves, to help them be more prepared for learning and support them to move towards their individual goals. It will also offer a calming and soothing space that provides a welcoming retreat for all our children to learn to process their emotions. The room has light and sound resources to both stimulate and promote our children’s wellbeing. Our star and universe projector are out of this world!”
